Million Stone

The Million Stone is the remaining fragment of a larger Milion monument that dates back to the 4th Century AD. It served as the starting point for any distance measured from what was then Constantinople to other cities in the Byzantine Empire and was originally a domed building standing on four arches, adorned with paintings and statues. The remaining fragment has been re-erected as a pillar near the Basilica Cistern on the northern corner of Hagia Sophia’s Square.
