Located in the center of Istanbul, the Old City is relatively easy to access on public transport
The Old City is well connected by a modern tram line which connects it to Galata in the north and the suburbs to the west. There are tram stations located at Eminönü, Sirkeci, Gülhane, Sultanahmet, Beyazıt, and Aksaray.
The easiest way to get to the Old City from Taksim is to take the funicular from the Taksim Square metro station and change to a tram at Kabataş station. You will need to buy two tokens (3TL each) at the metro station.
There is an efficient metro line which connects both Atatürk International Airport and the main Otogar (bus station) with Aksaray. From there you can follow the signs to the tramway and transfer onto a tram into the Old City. Alternatively, change at Zeytinburnu metro station if you are coming from the airport as the tram station is much closer. The metro is fast, clean and runs every 15 minutes. A journey from the airport to the Old City will take around 45 minutes.
The Old City is also well connected by public buses. The most useful lines for tourists are:
61B – Taksim to Beyazıt which passes by the Grand Bazaar
96T – Atatürk Airport to Taksim which pases through parts of the Old City. The stop nearest to Sultanahmet is Aksaray/Valide Sultan from where you can take a tram
Alternatively, any bus which goes to Eminönü or Beyazıt will pass close to Sultanahmet, from where it will be a 10-15 minute walk.
Ferries and private boats cross the Bosphorus from Kadıköy and Üsküdar and dock at Eminönü. Alternatively, take the boat from Üsküdar to Kabataş and then jump on a tram.
For those arriving in Istanbul by fast ferry from other towns in Turkey, you will most likely dock at Yenikapı on the southern shore of the peninsula.
Most trains from across Turkey and Europe arrive at Sirkeci station. There are also suburban trains (banliyö treni) which run every 30 minutes from Bakırköy and other coastal suburbs in the west, connecting through to Sirkeci.
There a plenty of yellow taxis throughout Istanbul which offer a relatively economic and efficient way of transport. Fares from Ataturk Airport to Sultanahmet cost around 50 TRY.
